Scooter Libby Verdict

Interesting editorial today in the New York Times. Yes, we know that Scooter Libby lied to the FBI and the Grand Jury. Yes, he was tried and convicted in a fair trial in open court and he will have the opportunity to appeal.

The New York Times editorial points out that Scooter Libby was afforded these rights at the same time the Bush Administration is attacking our The American Jucidial System -

"It was another reminder of how precious the American judicial system is, at a time when it is under serious attack from the same administration Mr. Libby served. That administration is systematically denying the right of counsel, the right to evidence and even the right to be tried to scores of prisoners who may have committed no crimes at all."

It bears remembering that our Constitutional Rights are precious. They were there for Scooter Libby and they should be there for everybody. Once you start selecting who is entitled to certain rights and who is not entitled to them, you are starting down the path toward facism and/or dictatorship - just the thing the administration claims we were overthrowing in Iraq.
